Maurizio NATALI

Curriculum

Short Bio

Maurizio Natali has a proven experience in the development, production, testing of traditional and nanostructured polymers and composite materials. After degree in physics, he has got a Ph.D. in material science working on a thesis related to the development of a nanostructured ablative bulk molding compound. He spent last five years of his career in the field of ablative materials earning a wide experience in the formulation and advanced characterization of polymeric heat shielding materials: he strictly cooperates with industrial and academic partners involved in the space sector. In collaboration with AVIO space (the company building the Vega rocket launcher), as a part of the VEga Consolidation and Evolution Preparation Programme (VECEP),  he studied and tested an elastomeric ablative compound for solid rocket motors with an improved ablation resistance. In cooperation with European Space Agency (ESA), he participated at the development of a high temperature nanostructured adhesive for carbon/carbon composites used in solid rocket nozzles. The produced adhesive exhibited a higher adhesive capability and an improved thermal-dimensional stability than commercial counterparts. He also strictly cooperates with Dr. J. Koo - at University of Texas at Austin - which is a worldwide recognized scientist in the field of ablative materials: during last six years a new class of TPU based elastomeric ablatives for solid rocket motors was developed. He also identified a low-cost, real-time, erosion rate technique for ablative materials to be used in the heat shield of space vehicles or in solid rocket nozzles. The cooperation with Dr. Koo also involved the developed of high enthalpy facilities able to simulate the extreme conditions in which the ablative materials must operate: the building of these devices involved the necessity to design and build precise controls enabling the proper implementation of the testing conditions. He conducted a series of studies on the possibility to characterize and evaluate the strength of charred ablative materials and its adhesion to the virgin substrate. The obtained results were presented at the scientific community via conferences (such as AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference) or peer-reviewed papers. He successfully contributed at the preparation of research proposals for agencies such as NASA and ESA.
