Docente: Prof. Dr. Piervincenzo Rizzo

Descrizione:

This short course will cover the fundamental principles of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) with particular attnetion to the challenges in civil and aerospace engineering. NDE is the examination of an object with technology that does not affect the object future usefulness. It embraces several techniques that include but are not limited to ultrasound, infrared thermography, radiography, and modal analysis. SHM uses NDE technology to implement a 24/7 damage identification strategy for infrastructure systems where damage is defined as changes to the material and/or geometric properties of these systems.

In this short course, which will be offered in English, the following topics will be covered:

  • NDE and SHM: why? and how?
  • NDE & SHM: broad overview of many NDE and SHM methods
  • Ultrasonic Testing
  • Acoustic Emission
  • Case studies: Bridge Health Monitoring; Axial stress measurements in rails.

Owing to the multi-disciplinary nature of NDE and SHM, the course will be open to graduate students of any engineering discipline and undergraduate students interested on pursuing a profesisonal/academic career in SHM. The short-corse will consist of 12 hours of frontal (in-person) lectures offered in April 2022.
